Welcome to the website of our study on detecting emotions using heterogeneous mobile phone data. This is an interdisciplinary study and our team consists of researchers at the University of Warwick, UK, New York University (NYU) and the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) at NYU.

Goal:
The purpose of this study is to measure individual's emotional fluctuation in a non-disruptive manner and understand the impact of the environment on people's moods.

Method:
We plan to use textual data entered by users in their mobile phones as a proxy for their emotions, in conjunction with information about their location and phone usage, so as to understand the effect of the environment on emotional fluctuation.

The first 30 participants will earn amazon vouchers: at the medium level will $150 worth of vouchers, at the full level $250 worth of vouchers.

To participate in the study you would need to:

  1. Read and understand the Participant Information Leaflet (PIL) (PDF) and keep a copy for your records
  2. Ask the researchers any questions you may have, especially about anything you find unclear. Contact us via e-mail: mobilesense-group@nyu.edu, we can also talk in person.
  3. After you have read the PIL and if you are interested in participating, you will need to complete an online questionnaire to sign up. We will select participants on the basis of the online questionnaire.
