The CUSP Data Hub is your gateway to discovering, interrogating, analyzing, and visualizing relevant urban datasets that are held and maintained in the CUSP Data Facility.
The CUSP Data Facility is being developed as a shared resource for NYC researchers, agencies, and citizens. Our vision is to create a statistically grounded empirical foundation for urban research and policy.
The CUSP Data Hub is still in beta. We welcome your feedback as to how we can make it more valuable to you, the user.
What can I do in the Data Facility?
The CUSP Data Facility connects users to relevant datasets for urban policy research. The Data Facility provides a suite of powerful tools and services so researchers can collaboratively design data workflows in a seamless and reproducible manner.

- Curation
- The CUSP Data Facility curates datasets by creating and harmonizing descriptive and technical metadata. We create statistically valid links between datasets in order to support reproducible research.

- Discovery
- Our interactive data catalog and data profiling tools enhance the discoverability and responsible use of CUSP datasets by our community of student and faculty researchers. The CUSP Data Facility holds over 800 datasets across 60 NYC agencies and beyond.

- Analysis
- The CUSP Data Facility provides a research workspace with a suite of familiar analysis tools and computing power so that you can instantly begin exploring the data you care about without the need for installing software and packages. We currently provide instances and modules of Jupyter and R, as well as Matlab, HUE, and database tools (the list is ever growing). RStudio and CartoDB are amongst the first data visualization tools that will be made available for researchers in the Facility.

- Collaboration
- Sometimes it takes a team. The Data Facility offers shared workspaces that allow you to collaborate with fellow researchers, whether they're down the hall, up the street, or across the country.

- Publishing
- When it's time to share your work, the Data Facility provides a number of options. Push your code to our GIT repo or Github, export your data in common formats, even reingest your derived data into the Data Facility to be used in future research. Only aggregated and disclosure reviewed derived data can be published, of course.

Why is CUSP building a Data Facility for NY Researchers, Agencies, and Citizens?
The effective use of data has become essential for city management and policy development, for citizen engagement, and for academic research. Yet the sheer volume of urban data is overwhelming—ranging from administrative records in city agencies, to financial records in businesses and again to real‐time data on citizen calls to 311, energy use, and particulate pollution. Data collection is outpacing the capacity of the urban policy and research community to make use of the data; artisanal pathways are being built, not interstate highways.
CUSP has established a Data Facility to support the empirical study of cities in conjunction with New York based researchers, agencies, and citizens. CUSP aims to reduce the multiple technical, legal, bureaucratic, capacity, and cost barriers to access so that the full research and policy benefits can be realized. The Data Facility has two goals: (i) ensure that new and existing urban data are made available to and used by current and future members of the research community in a state of the art facility, and (ii) staff in government agencies and local citizens are engaged by the ability to use the facility in addressing important urban problems.

This service model was developed with feedback from our collaborators and user communities in academia, private sector, and city government. We welcome feedback on our approach as we strive to develop high-value and scientifically grounded services and resources.
